What are Caliphs?
Leaders of Islam.
What are the two rival groups in Islam and what do they believe?
Sunni and Shia. Shia Muslims believe that all Caliphs should be descendants of Muhammad’s son-in-law, Ali. Sunni Muslims believe that other people can be leaders too.
Who were the Ottomans?
They were a group of Turks who would eventually conquer the Byzantine empire.
What Ottoman leader conquered the Byzantine empire?
Mehmet the second.
Did the Ottomans allow other religions to be practiced under their rule?
Yes, as long as they paid a special tax.
What are Mosques?
Islam houses of worship.
What are the five pillars of Islam (in English)?
Belief, prayer, fasting, and pilgrimage.
