Five Pillars
describe in practical terms how Muslims are to worship, or what it means to be a Muslim. They aim to help believers to state in word and in action that they are members of the Muslim community.
Hajj
meaning “pilgrimage”; fifth pillar; the pilgrimage to Mecca that Muslims are asked to make at least once in their lifetime, if they are healthy and can afford it.
Imam
A muslim leader of prayer and giver of sermons in the mosque.
Islam
second largest religion worldwide. it is a religion that includes Africans from Nigeria, Europeans from Albania, Arabs from Iraq and Southern Asians from Pakistan and Indonesia, etc; meaning “one who surrenders”
Ji-had
A theme in the Qur’an; For muslims, life is a struggle to submit to Allah’s will
Kaaba
It is at the heart of Hajj. It is the cube-shaped shrine in the centre of the Great Mosque in Mecca. It is the holiest place for Muslims and is a pilgrimage site. The circling of the Kaaba 7 times symbolizes the 7 times that Ibrahim circled it.

A place where Muslims gather for group worship

Qur’an
this book is the voice of Allah spoken to the prophet Muhammad by the Angel Gabriel. It gives guidance on how to worship, behave, and see the world.
Ramadan
the month in which Muhammad first received the divine message of Allah
Shahada
It is the Muslim profession of faith. The first pillar meaning “creed”. The underlying belief of Islam. There is only on God. It is the sign of belonging to the Muslim community.
Shiite
Muslims who believe that leadership if the Muslim community should be passed down through the direct descendants of the Prophet; forms the majority of the population in Iraq and Iran
Sunni
Muslims who believer that community leaders do not have to be descendants of the Prophet; Sunnis make up the majority of the worlds Muslim population.
Umma
The Muslim community
Caliph
spiritual leader of Islam, claiming succession from Muhammad
