The Kabah
Muslims believe that the kaaba was built by the first prophet adam, later rebuilt by abraham as a dedicated shrine to monotheism
Holds the black stone, which was said to be originally white but turned black due to sin, adherents kiss the stone
Hajj/Mecca
“Continually strive to meet one’s goal
Hajj is significant as if reflects the beliefs and ethics of islam by surrendering to the submission of allah’s will
Providing a spiritual transformation and strengthens the ummah
To seek mercy and forgiveness from allah in preparation for judgement day
Tawaf - The circling
Muhammad circumambulating the kaaba 7 time anti clockwise, adherents follow this tradition to draw closer to allah
“Just as we are circling the kaaba, the oldest place of worship on earth, we only obey you the absolute one worthy of worship”
By circling the Kaaba the adherent is putting Allah at the centre of their lives, and is at one with the universe
Recite ‘Talbiyah’ - “Here I am at your service O God”
Ihram
Intention to enter a spiritual status and readiness
Ihram is the first rite of Hajj, through which pilgrims acute a sense of equality
Stimulation of judgement day, by wearing a two piece white garment without any stitches, as they will also wear the same garment as their burial shroud when they face allah
Stripped of material goods and status to wholly devote themselves to the submission of Allah
Ihram’s first purpose - brings sanctity and shows that the adherent is ready to put God at the centre by forgoing nafs. Adherents must not show violence or wear perfume or jewellery.
Ihrams second purpose - brings unity, sense of ummah within the muslim identity, everyone is equal in the eyes of allah
Sa’y
Pilgrims reenace the distance hagar walked, 7 laps between safa and finishes at marwa, in the search for water
Angel gabriel pointed (with wing) to the ground to a spring of water
Pilgrims was white garments in spring (sacred water)at zam zam well
Standing at Arafat
Where last sermon was delivered
‘Stand before god’ and petition god through prayers and reading of the qur’an for forgiveness from noon until dusk
Tabiyah
Highest point of Hajj, most significant as is a trial run for judgement day occuring on the 9th day
“Hajj is arafat”
Sins forgiven ready to start a new, spiritual transformation and newfound spiritual status
Jamarat “stoning of the devil”
Muzdalifah and collect 49 pebbles
Travel to mina
Throw stones at 3 pillars, 7 stones at each
Created by abraham when the devil tried to tempt him into not killing his son and disobeying his faith, so abraham threw stones at him on 3 separate occasions which is where the pillars lie
Adherents are expressing their own renunciation of satan, and to withstand any temptations which may come their way
Feast of sacrifice
Pilgrims buy a goat or sheep if financially able, as the sacrificial animal
It is sacrificed and a portion is given away to the poor
Commemorates abraham’s willingness to sacrifice is son, symbolising the adherents preparedness to give up what is dearest to them, marking the muslim renunciation of temptation
Hajji and Hajja
Cerimeonal shaving and cutting of hair before the final visit to the kabah
As at then end of the journey pilgrims have been purified, forgiven of sins and restored faithful servants of god
Honorific titles are given to women and men, in recognition of their newfound spiritual status
