what is the aim of the A-E assessment?

A

The aim of the ABCDE assessment is to keep the patient alive and achieve the first steps to improvement – this will buy time to make a diagnosis and start further treatment. The key points are: Use the Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Exposure (ABCDE) approach to assess and treat the patient.

A
  • Used for communicating information in a variety of settings
    • Can be used for all types of Handover (clinical & non-Clinical)
    • Helps prioritise information for both parties
    • Decreased chance of forgetting relevant information
      Decreased assumptions made as the reason for the call is stated at the beginning of contact Research identified that a structured approach to handover reduces handover time and improves information transfer
