What is Imperialism?
Definition of Imperialism.
A. Imperialism is what takes over the weaker country’s resources and by using military forces, soldiers, oil (industrial), and money.
B. Imperialism is what had a powerful country that took over the weaker country or imperialised the country.
American interests in Hawaii
A. The Political Party (Missionary) wanted land from Hawaii because they wanted more land.
B. Hawaii has tons of resources.
C. They use Hawaii as a military place.
Spanish-American War
B. Imperialists supported the war because they saw economic and military Expansion if the US won. They hoped to detach Cuba from Spain so that US business could exploit the economic resources of Cuba more freely.
A. The US helped Cuba to gain independence while Spain owned that island.
Philippine-American War
A. America wanted to help the Philippines to gain independence.
B. The Philippines gave good military bases to protect interest.
Panama Canal
A. Americans knew they needed to move ships to the east and west quickly. If they did that, they would control power because they could control the oceans. The canal was a geopolitical strategy to make the United States the most powerful nation in the world.
B. Panama Canal revolutionised international trade by making it much quicker and easier to travel Atlantic Ocean between the Pacific Ocean.
Alaska Purchase
A. Alaska has a lot of resources that support the US to become more powerful and expanded from other countries. As well trading to China and Japan.
B. In 1899, Public opinion of the purchase turned more favourable when gold was discovered.
C. Later on, the resources of gold, oil, and great fishing were discovered in Alaska, ultimately earning back every penny spent. Ultimately, Alaska expanded the US’s borders and reaped many natural resources. This purchase helps the US gradually Imperialize and expand.
