What are the clinical features of irritable bowel syndrome?

A
  • typically younger women (21-40)
  • may follow attack of gastroenteritis
  • cramping abdominal pain
  • pain usually relieved by passing flatus or by defecation
  • variable bowel habit
  • diarrhoea usually worse in the mornings
  • bloating, abdominal distension, borgorygmi
  • tiredness common
