The diagnosis of IBS should be considered if the patient has had the following for at least 6 months:
Abdominal pain, and/or
Bloating, and/or
Change in bowel habit
What is the suggested primary care investigations of IBS?
full blood count
ESR/CRP
coeliac disease screen (tissue transglutaminase antibodies)
positive diagnosis of IBS criteria-
patient has abdominal pain relieved by defecation
associated with altered bowel frequency stool form
in addition to 2/4 symptoms-
-altered stool passage (straining, urgency, incomplete evacuation)
-abdominal bloating (more common in women than men),
-distension, tension or hardness
-symptoms made worse by eating
-passage of mucus
What is first-line for treatment of diarrhoea in IBS
Loperamide
A 24-year-old smoker presents with intermittent diarrhoea for the past 6 months. She feels bloated, especially around her periods. Bloods tests are normal.
