Take early and substantial action to keep well clear, positive alteration of course such as it is obvious to the other vessel that action has been taken
Where doubt exists as to the risk of collision, what should the vessel do?
Rule 7 - such risk shall be deemed to exist.
How can risk of collision be established by a vessel not in sight of an approaching vessel?
Radar, sound signals
How can risk of collision be established by a vessel when in sight of one another?
Taking a bearing - closing bearing would mean a risk exists.
What are the lights and shapes for a towing vessel?
If the tow is over 200m - diamonds by day, 3 masthead lights, yellow light above stern light, side lights and stern lights on towed vessel.
What are the lights and shapes for sailing vessels?
Less than 20m - Tricolour, or bi colour and stern light at deck height.
Greater than 20m - separate side lights and stern light at deck level.
Option extra - red over green.
Day shape when motor sailing - motoring cone
At night when motoring - steaming light and stern light - not masthead tricolour
What are the lights and day shapes for fishing vessels?
Day shape is two cones together - like west cardinal
Trawling - by night side lights, green over white all around
Fishing - by night side lights, red over white - all around
Second light to indicate outlaying gear and which direction
always size unknown
What are the lights and shapes for a vessel NUC?
Will not display PDV making way lights
Will display side lights and stern light
Day shape is two balls in a column
Night two red lights - red over red, captains dead

Day shape is ball diamond ball
Night light is red/white/red
On side with outlaying gear by day - balls on side of outlaying gear, diamonds on side that is clear to pass
By night, two reds on side with gear, greens on side clear to pass

By day, three balls - two on bottom and one on top

3 distinct strokes of a bell, bell rung for 5 seconds, 3 distinct strikes of a bell at the bow, then gong for 5 seconds at the stern
What sound signal would a vessel less than 100m make when a ground?
3 distinct strokes of a bell, bell rung for 5 seconds, 3 distancet strokes of a bell
