What is irony?
It is the use of words to convey the opposite of their literal meaning.
What are the three types of irony and their definition?
Situational Irony- when the opposite of what is expected to happen, happens.
verbal irony- in conversation when someone literally intends to be understood as meaning something which is the opposite of the usual meaning of what they say. (sarcasm)
dramatic irony- when the reader is aware of something that the characters in the story are not.
What is foreshadowing?
it is providing clues for the reader to be able to predict what might occur later on in the story.
What is the plot?
the ordered sequence of events that the characters encounter and the obstacles they overcome.
what are the 5 main areas in the plot?
Exposition- beginning of story where setting is introduced, nature and character’s background info.
rising action- main body of the story, characters/plot is developed and characters go through different series of events that are more suspenseful than the last.
Climax- it is the highest point of dramatic tension in a story, it is the final point of conflict between characters.
falling action- the wrapping up of the story, much shorter than all other parts of the plots.
conclusion/ denouement- the conclusion of the story, very short.
what is suspense?
a state or condition of mental uncertainty or excitement, waiting to find out what the outcome is with a sense of anxiety
what is setting?
it is the time(when) and place(where) of the story. very detailed. two types of setting are:
universal setting- general time and place
specific setting- makes the time and place in specific points written.
what is a protagonist? antagonist?
protagonist- the main character which the story follows, usually a good person which comes into conflict with an opposing force.
antagonist- the force that opposes the protagonist, is usually bad or evil.
what is, and what are the different types of conflict?
conflict- the struggle between two opposing forces, or beliefs which come from the basis of the plot.
types of conflict:
man vs. man
man vs. status quo or existing affairs
man vs. self
man vs. environment (can be physical, social, fateful or supernatural)
what is mood and tone?
mood is the emotional impression created by the story and tone is the voice or emotional quality carried by the authors choice of words.
what is and what are the different types of point of view?
it is the narrators relation to the world in the story, or the point of view which the story is being told in.
first person- narrator is also a character in story, uses i and we, cannot leave their point of view.
omniscient- narrator is god like, may go anywhere into the minds of characters, also can comment on behavior and significance of actions done.
limited omniscient- told in third person, viewpoint of one character and can move outside/ inside that characters mind but stays by their side. knows everything about that one character.
objective- roving camera, narrator goes anywhere but can only record what is seen or heard, cannot enter characters minds and their are like a spectator of the play. purely dialogue.
what is a genre?
is a kind of literary or artistic work, the type which that work is about or like. (types of genre: short story, thriller, poetry, mystery, etc,)
What is a theme?
a broad idea of message given by the author in the story. it may be about life, society or human nature and they usually explore timeless and universal ideas.
