Q

Primary Reasons for Ear Cropping

A

historically, in guard dogs ear cropping was done to give a dog a more “alert” look for it’s human

currently, it has been suggested that dogs with cropped ears are less likely to suffer
from infections of the ear canal, with no scientific evidence to back it up

Q

Discuss what evidence there is in the literature regarding the health
benefits of ear cropping.

A

Some evidence links infections to low hanging ears. No evidence is shown that ear cropping helps prevent infections or prevent later ear injury.

Q

What is the American Veterinary Medical Associations position on tail docking?
Discuss why they have taken this position.

A

Routine tail docking has not been shown to produce demonstrable benefits for most dogs. When it is performed routinely rather than in response to a medical need (such as tail trauma), it is considered cosmetic surgery. They take this position because the risks outweigh the “benefits”

A

-Burmese Pythons

26
Q

What percent of otters are sent to Japan?

A

80% of the illegal otter trade

27
Q

After watching the entire video of the otter pet trade, provide your
analysis of the ethics of using wild animals as pets

A

I believe using wild animals as pets is a fine line between harmful and “unique.” Most of the otters sent to Japan are used for monetary gain, such as cafes. I think many factors in doing this are harmful to the animals, such as population, human and animal health, danger to other species, and inability to live in the wild after being in captivity.
