Parenteral: cefuroxime, cefotetan, cefoxitin
*grouped as cephamycins: have activity against anaerobes
Third generation cephalosporins
Oral: cefdinir, cefditoren, cefpodoxime, ceftibuten
Parenteral: cefotaxime, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone
Fourth generation cephalosporins
Parenteral: cefepime
Fifth generation cephalosporins
Parenteral: ceftaroline
1st generation bacterial coverage
Gram positive: staphylococci (MSSA), streptococci
Gram negative: Proteus mirabilis, E. coli, Klebsiella sp. (PEK)
2nd generation bacterial coverage
Gram positive: staphylococci (MSSA), streptococci
Gram negative: Haemophilus, Neisseria sp., Proteus mirabilis, E. coli, Klebsiella sp. (HNPEK)
3rd generation bacterial coverage
Gram positive: staphylococci (MSSA), streptococci (S. pneumoniae)
Gram negative: better HNPEK coverage
4th generation bacterial coverage
Gram positive: staphylococci (MSSA), streptococci
Gram negative: HNPEK + Serratia (HNPEKS) + Citrobacter, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Enterobacter sp. (CAPE)
5th generation bacterial coverage
Gram positive: staphylococci (MSSA & MRSA), streptococci
Gram negative: HNPEK
