Iraneaus' Theodicy and Augustine Theodicy (AS) Flashcards
what is the origin of evil for augustine
the Fall- the fall of angels= natural evil, the fall of man= moral evil
how did the fall of angels create natural evil
Lucifer chose to rebel against god , this caused disharmony in the natural world which led to natural evil like tsunamis
how did the fall of man cause moral evil
temptation of adam and eve, garden of eden, the snake, ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. this is ORIGINAL SIN that is seminally present in all of us= moral evil
what is natural evil
disruption of the natural order, resulting in a damaged environment -eg tsunamis
what is moral evil
original sin (first sin) all humans are 'seminally present' in adam- this all humans were present in adams sin and the fall. all humans inherit the tendency to choose evil
Augustine quote
‘all sin is either sin or punishment for sin’
how is Augustine’s theodicy soul deciding
all humans who repent and accept the salvation jesus brings will escape punishment. at the end of time all will be judged. the good will be rewarded in heaven and the evil will receive punishment.
what does iraneaus say about evil
god created the world with natural and moral evil. god sustains the world and is aware of the natural and moral evil in it. iraneaus= evil serves a purpose
why is suffering necessary for iraneaus
it is only through experience, including suffering, that humans learn. worthwhile virtues are only learnt through effort. suffering allows us to grow morally
iraneaus afterlife
suggests that humans continue to develop in the afterlife. holds traditional concept of the seperation off those who reject god and those who make peace with god.
hick- why is his theodicy soul making
pain is necessary as it teaches us what is valuable and dangerous- the world seems to suit the purpose of soul making. suffering is a necessary part of the predictable universe which follows certain laws that may cause suffering
why did god have to make a world with evil- hick
or humans wouldn’t have the choice between good and evil. choices must have real consequences both good and bad- you have to know the consequences
afterlife/eschatological dimension hick - universal salvation, purpose of evil, heaven, etc
often suffering doesn’t produce character development
there must be compensation for suffering in life. the rewards of heaven justifies even the greatest pain and suffering (good outweighs evil).
the purpose of evil is to produce good and thus to succeed everyone must achieve perfection
hick believes in universal salvation. for hick hell is a place of temporary suffering (like purgatory). eventually we will all reach the likeness of god, reach perfection and enter heaven.
