Q
  1. Why did you choose your major and your school?
A

I have gained a solid foundation in business administration, math, econ, and finance from my undergraduate studies. And during the three years of experience working in these fields, I enhanced my financial modeling and problem-solving skills, as well as my business acumen.

However, a new need arises for me to master more data-driven approaches to derive meaningful insights and make predictions to further improve business operations, so I was hoping to have a much more profound knowledge of data analytics. Therefore, I chose to continue studying for a master’s degree in business analytics at the University of Rochester, which has one of the best programs to enhance students’ analytical techniques and build their programming skillset to deal with business problems. Pursuing this degree will make me better prepared for my career goal as a business analyst.

Q
  1. What are your hobbies and what do you really passionate about?
A

I spend most of my spare time on sports and working out. I like yoga, running, hiking, and I am training for my first marathon this coming September. My schoolwork is challenging, so sports and workouts help me stay healthy, destress, and relax. I like yoga because that is the time I used to meditate peacefully. Hiking takes me outside to enjoy nature, clear my mind, and recharge. I am also proud that I am preparing for the Rochester marathon this fall. It has always been my personal goal. Preparing for the marathon is a commitment, and I have my passion for it. I am dedicating time to training, no matter rain or shine, and I am pushing myself to achieve this goal. I have also found a group of like-minded runners to train together, making friends while embracing the challenge. I am looking forward to completing this marathon and meeting this personal goal.

Q
  1. Any experience with a data-related project? Give an example of what you have done (STAR).
A

Last semester, our team analyzed a conjoint experiment conducted for a toy horse company and helped them determine new product designs with maximum profitability.

The biggest challenge we have was understanding our consumer preferences.

We had the conjoint study data from 500 individuals based on four main attributes of toy horses. After going through basic data cleaning, we first determined the utilities of attributes to assess our consumer preferences. We then conducted benefit segmentation using cluster analysis in R to identify the ideal product for each category. After that, we determined the most desirable designs and did market simulations in Python on different scenarios to find the best product line strategy. In the end, we finalized our results and presented recommendations to the company.

Q
  1. Do you have any experience using SQL, Tableau, Access, Excel…?
A

I am an expert in SQL. In our recent project, we got a sales database with more than 5000 rows from a freight company. We needed to design a data warehouse and present insights to senior management using data visualization in Tableau to help them make decisions.

The database contains 11 complex transactional data related to the company’s operations. I first performed data cleaning and reformatting. Then I applied the ETL process to extract the data from different source systems, transform it with relevant aggregate statistics, and finally load it into the data warehouse. Based on that, I created eight visualizations with required queries and integrated them into one dashboard. The dashboard displays valuable insights about the company’s business performance. For example, it can help the manager evaluate each employee’s contribution or decide which areas to target in the future.

Q
  1. Do you have experience in market research? Give an example of what you have done (STAR).
A

Let me talk about a task I had when working as an analyst at the Kasen Law Firm. One time, I had to work with the marketing team to conduct research to identify opportunities and issues in the company. Our revenue has declined, and the number of new customers has decreased every month.

We designed a customer online survey and got feedback from 200 customers. According to the study, we found insight from customer acquisition sources. 80% of new customers came from referrals, but only 20% were fresh leads. Therefore, we think advertising should be a potential opportunity to reach first-time customers. So we did a competitor advertisement analysis and proposed to launch Google search ads and emails campaigns, which are cost effective. In addition, I proposed new customer discounts to formulate new marketing strategies.

As a result, we successfully helped the firm increase monthly revenue by an average of 12%.

Q
  1. Leadership Skills – Conflict Management
A

I consider my leadership skills to be one of my greatest strengths. I have worked with people from different teams or departments before, and I learned that conflict management is very crucial for team collaborations.

For example, once I worked with several people from different divisions to deliver an update of our online order website. Unfortunately, a few days before the due date, there was a major blow-up on the technical side, which caused the website did not work on mobile devices. Since we knew that most of our customers used to place orders through their mobile devices, several team members had some sharp criticisms for the team member from the technology division. However, I knew that internal conflict at this time would not help us solve the problem, so I decided to step up and tackle this issue head-on. I first reminded my teammates that our goal is to meet our deadline, so pointing fingers at each other won’t help. Then, with my suggestion, our team set a rule to be engaged in conversation rather than criticism.

By providing constructive and speedy feedback to the technology team, we were able to help them debug and launch our website successfully before the deadline.
