Anticholinergic / Parasympatholytic
Mechanism of Action
Muscarinic ACh-R antagonist → inhibits parasympathetic stimulation in bronchial smooth muscle cells, submucosal glands, and goblet cells → dries respiratory tract secretions and allows for bronchodilation
Pharmacokinetics
Onset of Action = Varies
Peak Effects = 1.5-2 hours
Duration of Effect = 4-6 hours
Half-Life = 1.5-2 hours
Indications/Field use
Asthma/COPD/RAD
Contraindications
None
Dose
A: 500ug nebulized with oxygen 8LPM q 5 min up to 3 doses
P: same
Precautions
Ipratropium bromide should be administered concurrently with albuterol x 3 doses

Palpitations, dizziness, headache, anxiety, nervousness, rash, dry mouth, nausea & vomiting
