What does IPA mean?
International Phonetic Alphabet
Define IPA.
- Alphabetic system of phonetic notation
- Used to accurately represent the pronunciation of languages
- Provides a unique symbol for each distinctive sound in a language
Why do we need IPA symbols?
- The same sound may be represented by many letters or combination of letters
- The same letter may represent a variety of sounds
- A combination of letters may represent a single sound
- A single letter may represent a combination of sounds
- Some letters in a word may not be pronounced at all
- There may be no letter to represent a sound that occurs in a word
What do letters inside / / mean?
It means that it is only referring to one sound but not the word itself.
