IP Protocol Types Flashcards
What is Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)?
A communications standard that enables application programs and computing devices to exchange messages over a network.
What is User Datagram Protocol (UDP)?
A communications protocol for time-sensitive applications like gaming, playing videos, or Domain Name System (DNS) lookups.
What is Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP)?
Used to communicate information about network connectivity issues back to the sender.
What is Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE)?
A tunneling protocol used to encapsulate and route data via a virtual point-to-point connection.
What is Internet Protocol Security (IPSec)?
A group of protocols for securing connections between devices.
What is Authentication Header (AH)?
Ensures that data packets are from a trusted source and that the data has not been tampered with.
What is Encapsulating Security Protocol (ESP)?
Encrypts the IP header and the payload for each packet — unless transport mode is used, in which case it only encrypts the payload.
