what are the two places you can dispose of sharps and what would go in them?
- blue lid sharps box - pharmaceutically contaminated sharps and glassware, half used LA within safety syringe, sedation drug ampules
- orange lid sharps box - infectious sharps, broken glass, needles, scalpel blades, sutures, burs, endo files, empty LA cartidges
where would you dispose of amalgam waste and what would go in it?
red stream waste box - waste amalgam, amalgam capsules, extracted teeth with amalgam
where would you dispose of domestic waste? give examples
black bag - paper towels, wrapping from dental kits
what are the rules about filling sharps containers?

- temporary closure mechanism should be closed when container is not in use
- lid should be firmly closed in place
- do not fill above the line, close once reached
what should you do if you have a sharps injury?
- immediately stop procedure
- inform the patient
- make the sharp safe
- check injury, carry out first aid
- inform lead clinician, dental nurse leader
- carry out risk assessment
- contact occupational health
- consent source - bloods
- fill out paperwork
- complete online DATIX form
what should you do if you think you have sustained a sharps injury?

- stop what you are doing
- take off gloves
- get supervising clinician immediately, axplain situation
- investigate injury site, confirm NO injury before restarting
- dispose of used sharp and start again with new
what should happen if there is significant ocupational exposure to a student?

- student has immediate access to medical advice
- student has been offered post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) within the hour
- any other medical treatment as advised by a registered medical practitioner
- consider counselling

- leave for 3 mins or follow manufacturer instructions
- gather gross contamination using scoop
- place in healthcare waste
- wash area with water and general purpose detergent
- dry area with paper towels adn dispose
- record on DATIX
