Iowa Lab Course Flashcards
Continuous Processes
An uninterrupted flow of material from start to finish as it transitions from a raw material to a finished product.
Turn-arounds
Continuous processes are shut down for scheduled maintenance outaes.
Batch Process
Has a starting and ending point. Similar to cooking in that you have a list of iterms and a procedured consisting of a series of steps for reacting, blending, or mixing components.
Batch Management System
Work with the control system to execute batch processes.
Hybrid process
Uses combination of continuous and batch controls. Example: Water treatment. It’s mostly continuous, but sometimes tanks need to be flushed.
Discrete manufacturing
Involves creating, assembling, and handling individual components to make a product. Products are easily counted. Example: Computers, books, pencils, etc.
Upstream (dependency)
Raw material for the primary process.
Main Process (dependency)
Main process for producing end process.
Downstream (dependency)
Responsible for handling main product.
Pneumatic (dependency)
Pressurized air for control valves.
Energy Sources (dependency)
Processes depend on energy sources such as electricity.
Environmental (dependency)
Weather effects.
Communication (dependency)
All processes must communicate to function properly.
Site facilities
Process and discrete manufacturing industries produce their products at a site contained within a fence.
Transmission facilities
Span counties, states, or countries. E.g. Transmission lines or pipelines. Most of the infrastructure, such as pumps and compressor stations, are located in remote locations.
