IoT Flashcards
IoT definition
network of physical objects embedded with sensors, software, and other technologies that enable them to exchange data over the internet or other communication networks
IoT enabling technologies
- big data
- AI
- embedded systems
- cloud computing
- data analytics
- communication protocol
- wireless sensor network
Features of IoT
1) network connectivity internet: at all levels (very close range = between devices, farther away = device-cloud, large distance)
2) things, sensors, and devices
3) intelligence, smart analytics
4) data, information
5) automation, decision, action
6) communication, data distribution
7) ecosystem community: main actors =
- sensing, embedded processing, connectivity
- smart devices, cloud computing, big data
- technology software apps
- users, groups of community
IoT decision framework
it is a structured approach for powerful IoT products. it is divided in 5 layers of complexity of technology (IoT technology stack) and 6 key decision areas, each evaluated at each stack stage
IoT technology stack
(layers of complexity of technology)
1) device hardware
2) device software
3) communications
4) cloud platform
5) cloud applications
IoT decision framework: key decision areas
1) UX
2) data
3) business
4) technology
5) security
6) standards and regulations
IoT architecture components
there is no universally defined standard, but there are 4 major components:
1) sensors / devices: LAN or PAN, sensors actuators (emit, process data), connected wire or wireless
2) gateways and networks; LAN or WAN, to transfer from sensors
3) cloud management service layer: Edge IT (= hardware and software gateways that analyse and preprocess data before sending it to the cloud), data center / cloud (data analytics + security controls)
4) application layer
IoT benefits: for business
- improving customer experience (understanding customer needs)
- new business models
- cost reduction + productivity (inventory and waste management)
- asset tracking and waste reduction
- more data, more opportunities
- greater efficiency task (automatising)
