Ions and octet rule Flashcards
1
Q
octet rule
A
- most elements are more stable with full valence shells
- Often means 8 electrons
2
Q
Isoelectronic
A
- ions containing the same number of electrons: protons and neutrons are different
- Atoms lose/gain electrons to be isoelectronic with a noble gas
3
Q
standard atomic notation
A
represents the atomic mass and atomic number of an element (higher number always on the top)
4
Q
multivalent metals
A
- form more than one ion
- classical naming system used suffix “ic” for higher valence and “ous” for lower valance
5
Q
polyatomic ions
A
- an ion with more than one atom
- names often end with “ate” or “ite”
6
Q
to achieve a stable octet, atoms can:
A
- share electrons with other atoms (covalent bond)
OR - Lose or gain electrons to form ions
7
Q
types of ions
A
- cation
- anion
8
Q
cation
A
- positive
- loss of electrons
- overall charge = +ve
9
Q
anion
A
- negative
- gain of electrons
- overall charge = -ve
10
Q
ions in your body
A
Ca2+: bones/ teeth
I-: regulates metabolism
