Ions And Ionic Compounds Flashcards
Cation:
Positively charged ion ( removing electron )
Metals will lose electrons thereby forming cation.
Anion:
negatively charged ion ( adding electron )
Non metals tend to gain electrons thereby forming anion
Ion:
An electrically charged atom.
Ionic bonding
: is one of the ways atoms can form compounds
Ionisation energy:
” energy required to remove 1 electron from each atom atom in 1 mole of gaseous atoms to form 1 mole of gaseous”
Electrolysis:
Electric current is used to break down a substance made up of ions.
Electrolyte
Is the name for the substance being broken down.
P. A. N. I. C
Positive anode negative cathode
Cathod:
Negative electrode
Anode
Positive cathod
Properties of ionic bounding.
High melting point and high boiling.
Dissolve easily in water. The ions separates and are free to move this creating a electric current.
Ionic compounds:
Giant lattice
Strong electrostatic forces of attraction; between oppositely charged ions (all directions)
Aluminium oxide electrolysis.
Molten aluminum oxide_ created - dissolving the aluminum in molten cryolite.
This forms the electrolyte - through which energy can pass- this causes the aluminum oxide to split into aluminum and oxygen
Gaining electrons is reduction
The positives are reduced
Losing electrons :
Is oxidization
