Ions And Bonding Flashcards
What are an ions?
Atoms or a group of atoms that have an electrical charge, due to losing or gaining a proton or electron
What are cations?
Atoms that are positively charged +1
What are polyatomic ions?
A group of atoms that join together to form a charge-meaning they have either more protons then electrons, or more electrons then protons giving it a charge
Are ions made up of more than one type of atom
Behave ( react ) in the same way as simple ions
What is an anion?
An atom that has a negative charge
When are atoms most stable?
When they have a full outer shell of valence electrons like group 8a
What is it called when atoms have a full outer shell of valence electrons?
The octete rule
How do atoms become cations?
When they lose electrons they become positively charged
How to atoms become anions?
When they gain electrons they become negatively charged
What is an ionic bond?
Where a metal ( positive) and a non metal ( negative) connect together
Electrons get stolen and opposites attract
( lattice structure ( box like shaped )
How is an ionic bond formed?
When a metal gives an electron ( making it a positive charge ) to a non metal ( giving it a negative charge ) because of this both atoms become charged. Ions have opposite charges so they stick together
Is hydrogen a metal or non metal?
Non metal despite being on the periodic table under metal! Only exception to the rule
What is a molecular or covalent bond?
Is the chemical bond between two non metals and they share electrons
( made up of molecules ) ( which is a bunch of atoms stuck together in a clump )
What sticks covalent compounds together
Because there sharing electrons together
What sticks ionic compounds together?
Because one has stolen the others electrons and created opposite charges which in return they become stuck together because opposites attracts
What is a hydrogen bond?
A type of intermolecular bond ( form between molecules ) they can exist between atoms in different molecules or in parts of the same molecule. Usually fluorine, nitrogen or oxygen
