Ions Flashcards
What is an ion?
It’s an atom/group of atoms that have lost/gained electrons resulting in a charged particle.
What are bonds?
They are forces of attraction that hold atoms together.
When are atoms more stable?
When their outer shells are full.
How can the outer shell of an atom become full?
This can happen through the transfer of electrons,forming charged particles called ions.
What is the charge of an ion that has lost one electron?
+1
What is the charge of an ion that has gained 2 electrons?
-2
How do you draw an ion?
You put a square bracket, a diagram of the ion, a square bracket and above it on the right side you put the charge. Lastly, below you put the electronic configuration.
What is a positive ion called?
A cation.
What is a negative ion called?
An anion.
What will metals always do?
They will always lose electrons and form positive ions.
What will non-metals always do?
Gain electrons and form positive ions.
What does ionic bonding always take place between?
A metal and a non-metal.
What is a dot and cross diagram?
A diagram showing which electrons have been lost and gained by 2 atoms.
If i had a lithium atom (2,1) and a fluorine atom (2,7) what would my dot and cross diagrams look like for each ion.
Lithium = 2 dots
Fluorine = 2 crosses, 7 crosses and a dot
