Ionization Energy Flashcards
What is Ionization Energy?
The energy required to remove one mole of electrons from one mole of atoms in a gaseous state in order to form 1+ ions also in their gaseous state
What is atomic Shielding?
Electrostatic attraction between the nucleus and electrons, this decreases IE for if there are a high amount of electrons in the inner shells.
What is nuclear charge?
As number of protons increase I.E increases as more energy is needed to remove the electron
What is the affect of atomic radii on IE?
The further the electron is from the nucleus the IE is decreased.
What is the trend of period 3 IE?
Aluminium and Sulphur are the anomalies as they are below the gradual increase. Due to Al ridding off and unstable P orbital. And for sulphur the 4th electron in the P orbital omits a high amount of repulsion due to spin pairing repulsion.
How to calculate what group and atom is due to its IE?
Look at the list and find the IE that has the largest jump and the bottom one will be the group it is in
