Ioniseation Energy Flashcards
Basics
Must use the gas state symbol
The lower the ionisation energy the easier it is to take an electron from
Factors effecting ionisation energy
Nuclear charge:the more protons there are in the nucleus the more positively charged and the stronger the attraction is for the nucleus
Distance from nucleus:attractions falls off very rapidly with distance
Shielding:as the number of electrons and shells between the nucleus and the outer electrons, the outer shells feel less attraction to the nucleus
Second ionisation energy
Second ionisation energies require more energy due to the electrons being removed from a positive rather than an atom
Ionisation trends across periods
A drop between group 2 and 3 : is due to the atoms shell structure last electron being on a different energy electron
The drop between 5 and 6 is due to electron repulsion this makes the electron easier to remove from shared orbitals
