Ionisation Energy Flashcards
1
Q
What is an orbital ?
A
A three dimensional space in which an electron can be found
2
Q
Two electrons in the same orbital spin in opposite directions to minimise …… ?
A
Repulsion
3
Q
Definition of the first ionisation energy
A
The energy required to remove an electron from 1 mol of gaseous atoms to form 1 mol of gaseous +1 ions.
4
Q
Why do group 6 elements have a lower ionisation energy than group 5?
A
- Has a p4 arrangement
- There’s an electron pair in the p orbital.
- Creates a greater repulsion between electron pair.
- So less energy required to remove the outer electron.
