IONISATION ENERGY Flashcards
What is ionisation energy?
Minimum energy needed for one mole of electrons to move from one mole of atoms in a gaseous state
What 3 factors affect IE?
Distance of electrons from the nucleus
attraction of the nucleus
Shielding of the attraction of the nucleus
Ionisation energy along a period?
First IE increases due to decreasing atomic radius
greater electrostatic forces of attraction
ionisation energy down a group?
First IE decreases due to increasing atomic radius & shielding
What does shielding do?
Reduces the effect of electrostatic forces of attraction
What is successive ionisation energy?
More electrons being removed from an ion that’s becoming increasingly positive
Why are sussessive ionisation energies always higher?
When the first electron is removed, a positive ion is formed
-The ion increases the attraction on the remaining electrons so the energy required to move the next electron is larger
What are electrostatic forces of attraction?
non-contact attractive or repulsive forces
(push and pull objects without touching it)
