Ionic Compounds Flashcards
Ionic bonds always produce:
Compounds with similar structures
Ionic compounds have:
A regular lattice structure
In a ionic compound the ions are:
Closely packed in a regular lattice arrangement
Why are ions closely packed in ionic compounds:
Ionic bonds are very strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions.
They all have similar properties caused by their structure.
Ionic compounds characteristics:
Have high melting points and boiling points
Conduct electricity when aqueous or molten
Why do ionic compounds have high melting points and boiling points:
Due to very strong bonds between the ions.
Takes a lot of energy to break these bonds.
Why do ionic compounds conduct electricity when aqueous or molten:
Aqueous solutions, the ions separate and are all free to move, so they’ll carry electric current
When they melt, ions are free to move and they’ll carry electric current
