Ionic Compounds Flashcards
What elements form ionic compounds?
Metals and nonmetals
How is an ionic compound formed?
A collision between anions and cations with opposite charges
Electrostatic attraction
Attraction between opposite charged ions
Octet rule
It is required for a stable configuration. 8 valence electrons
What are formed in ionic compounds?
Cations and anions
How do the ions in ionic compounds arrange?
In patterns called lattice structures
The ionic compounds are NOT molecules, they tend to be____
Salts or crystals
Why do they have very high melting and boiling points?
Because the electrostatic attraction is very strong and the ions are tightly held together
Why do ionic compounds tend to be brittle?
Because when part of the lattice structure is shifted down, ions of the same charge will be together and repel, making it break
Do ionic compounds transfer electricity when they are dissolved in water or in their solid state? Why?
In water, because when they dissolve, the ions separate and move freely allowing electricity to flow
