Ionic Compounds Flashcards
What type of structure does a Ionic Compound have?
Ionic Compounds have a regular Lattice structure
The ions form a closely packed regular lattices arrangement and there are very strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions, in all directions in the lattice.
Do Ionic Compounds all have similar Properties?
Yes
They all have high melting points and high boiling points due to the many strong bonds between the ions.
Solid Ionic Compounds can’t conduct electricity because the ions are held in place. But when ionic compounds melt, the ions are free to move and they’ll carry electric charge, meaning it can conduct electricity.
Some ionic compounds also dissolve in water. The ions separate and are all free to move in the solution, so they’ll carry electric charge.
