Ionic compound properties Flashcards
1
Q
what structure is an ionic compound?
A
lattice structure
2
Q
what does a lattice structure consist of?
A
- regular arrangement of ions
- held together by strong electrostatic forces between oppositely charged ions
3
Q
name the three main properties of ionic compounds.
A
- high melting and boiling points
- most dissolve in water
- have the ability to conduct electricity when molten/dissolved but not when solid
4
Q
Explain why magnesium oxide has a higher melting and boiling point than sodium oxide.
A
The charge difference is greater for magnesium oxide. The electrostatic attractions are strong so it requires a lot more energy to separate the ions to melt it.
5
Q
Explain why sodium chloride conducts electricity when dissolved and molten but not when a solid.
A
Electric currents can flow through when it is molten becasue the lattice structure is broken so the attractions are weaker.
