Q

name the three main properties of ionic compounds.

A
  • high melting and boiling points
  • most dissolve in water
  • have the ability to conduct electricity when molten/dissolved but not when solid

Q

Explain why magnesium oxide has a higher melting and boiling point than sodium oxide.

A

The charge difference is greater for magnesium oxide. The electrostatic attractions are strong so it requires a lot more energy to separate the ions to melt it.

Q

Explain why sodium chloride conducts electricity when dissolved and molten but not when a solid.

A

Electric currents can flow through when it is molten becasue the lattice structure is broken so the attractions are weaker.
