Ionic Bonds Flashcards
What makes an ionic bond?
An ionic bond is the result of the force of attraction between a cation and an anion.
When are ionic bonds at their strongest and weakest?
Strongest in a vacuum and weakest in a medium such as water.
What is electronegativity?
An atoms attraction for electrons.
True or False: atoms with a high electronegativity are more likely to steal an electron.
True.
How is an ionic bond formed?
It is formed by the transfer of one or more valence electrons from an atom of lower electronegativity to an atom of high electronegativity.
When does an atom become an anion?
If it is the more electromagnetic atom it will gain one or more valence electrons and become an anion.
When does an atom become a cation?
If it is the less electromagnetic atom is will lose electrons and become a cation.
What is an ionic compound?
A compound formed by the combination of an anion and a cation.
What is the order of electronegative atoms from strongest to weakest? (8 atoms to name in total)
- Oxygen
- Chlorine
- Nitrogen
- Carbon
- Hydrogen
- Phosphorus
- Calcium
- Sodium
