Ionic bonds Flashcards
what is an ionic bond?
it is when a metal gives the electrons (e-) in its outer shell to a non-metal, so the metal forms a positive ion, and the nonmetal forms a negative ion.
draw an ionic bond between magniesium and oxygen (Mg and O)
i.e.
magnesium oxide
… …
mg 0 = mg x 0 x
… …
[Mg]2- [0]2-
what is the first part
title
what is the second part
i.e.
… …
mg 0 x2 x 0 x
… …
what is the third part?
magniesuim lost 2 electrons so [mg]2-
Oxegen gained 2 [o]2+
what holds the ions together
a strong electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions
ionic bonding is between
metals and non metals
what is the fourth part?
write the formula i.e. MgO = num. of metals used and num. of nonmetals used.
ions are______in an ionic bond
transfered
do ions conduct electricity?
not unless molten or aquias, because the electrons are not free
the melting / boiling point is…
high because the electrostatic force of attraction is hard to break
