Ionic Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What is ionic bonding
A
Ionic bonding is the electrostatic attraction between positive and negative ions
2
Q
Ionic bonding usually occurs when…
A
a metal combines with a non metal
3
Q
What happens during ionic bonding
A
the atoms achieve the stable electron arrangement by the transfer of electrons and achieve the electron arrangement of a noble gas
4
Q
What are the properties of ionic compounds
A
- They have high melting and boiling points because strong ionic bonds must be broken in order to break up the lattice
- They conduct electricity but only when molten or in solution as the lattice structure breaks up allowing the ions to be free to move
- Many ionic compounds are soluble in water. AS they dissolve the lattice structure breaks up allowing the ions to be free to move
5
Q
What do ionic compounds form
A
lattice structure of oppositely charged ion with each positive ion surrounded by negative ion and each negative ion surrounded by positive ions
6
Q
How can conduction in ionic compounds be explained
A
the movement of ions towards oppositely charged electrodes
