Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What is ionic bonding?
The transfer of electrons between a metal and a non-metal to gain full outer shells.
What two substances react together in ionic bonding?
A metal and a non-metal.
Which reactant in ionic bonding is oxidised to form a cation?
The metal loses electrons (oxidised) to form a positive ion (cation).
Which reactant in ionic bonding is reduced to form an anion?
The non-metal gains the electrons from the metal to form a negative ion (anion).
How do the oppositely charged ions form ionic bonds?
The oppositely charged ions are strongly attracted to one another by electrostatic forces. This attraction is called an ionic bond.
In a dot and cross diagram, which is the metal and which is the non-metal?
The metal is the dot, and the non-metal is the cross.
