Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What are ions?
Electrically charged particles that form when atoms lose or gain electrons
When are ions formed?
When metals react with non metals and electrons are transferred from the metal atoms to the non metal atoms
When a metal reacts with a non metal, what do we call the compound formed?
An ionic compound?
What do the ions in an ionic compound form?
A regular three dimensional lattice
What is the force called between the ions called?
It is an ionic bond, which is a strong electrostatic force of attraction
In the lattice what is each ion surrounded by?
Ions with the opposite charge
Is an ionic lattice giant or tiny and why?
It is a giant structure because it is repeated many times
What is an ionic bond?
A strong electrostatic force of attraction between ions with opposite charges
