Ionic Bonding Flashcards
Ionic Bond
Electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
Ions
Formed when one or more electrons are transferred from one atom to another
Sulfate ion
SO4 2-
Hydroxide ion
OH -
Nitrate ion
NO3 -
Carbonate ion
CO3 2-
Ammonium ion
NH4 +
Giant Ionic compounds
Ionic crystals are giant lattices (regular structures) of ions
Giant = same basic unit repeated
Conductive properties of ionic compounds
ONLY conduct electricity when molten/dissolved as ions are free to move and carry charge
Melting points of ionic compounds
High melting point as giant ionic lattices are held together by strong electrostatic forces which require lots of energy to overcome
Dissolving properties of ionic compounds
polar water molecules pull ions away from the lattice causing it to dissolve
