Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What is ionic bonding?
The transferring of electrons to make ions, which are strongly attracted to each other.
What do attracted ions have?
Opposite charges.
What type of atom loses and electron and what does it become?
An atom with an outer shell with only 1/2/3 electrons on it, and it becomes a positive ion.
What type of atom gains an electron and what does it become?
An atom with a nearly full outer shell, and it becomes a negative ion.
What type of structure do ionic compounds have and how do they stay together?
Ionic compounds always have giant regular lattices with very strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged atoms, in all directions.
What properties do ionic compounds have?
1) High melting and boiling points - strong attraction between atoms
2) When they melt, they will carry an electric current
3) They dissolve easily in water
