Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What did atoms try to have
A full outer shell
When an atom has 1 or two electrons on its outer shell what will it try and do with them
Get rid of them
If atom x has lost two of its electrons what does it become
An ion (X2+)
What is the structure of an ionic compound
A regular lattice
Why do ionic lattices form
Due to the strong electrostatic forces if attraction between the oppositely charged ions
What properties do ionic compounds have
High melting points and high boiling points
Carry current in molten form
Easily dissolved
What are ionic compounds made up of
A metal and a non metal
What type of ions does group two make
2+ ions
How do you draw an ionic compound
Draw brackets around both atom structures
Draw one with electrons as dots and the other with electrons as crosses. Draw where the electrons have been shared by putting a dot on the cross atom or vice versa. Put a + or - to show the charge. The one that has gained an electron is negative the one that has lost one is positive. The more electrons it loses/gains the higher the number before the symbol
