Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What is an atom?
An atom the the smallest part of an element that can exist.
What is an ion?
Ions are changed particles that have either gained or lost electrons.
What is an electron?
An electron is a subatomic particle that is found in all atoms.
How do electrons transfer?
Electrons transfer through conduction, friction and also polarisation.
What is the difference between metal and non metal ions?
Metals are typically positive ions whilst non metals are negative ions.
What is an ionic bond?
An ionic bond is a chemical bond when one atom gives up one or more electrons to another atom.
What is an electrostatic attraction?
An electrostatic attraction is the attraction between protons and electrons.
How do electrostatic attractions work?
Electrostatic forces are non contact forces, they pull and push on objects without touching them.
Name 3 things with a high melting point
Diamond, Tungsten and also Titanium.
What does it mean if something is soluble?
A substance is soluble if it dissolves in certain fluids.
Name 3 electrical conductors
Silver, Gold and Aluminium
What does it mean if something is molten?
Something is molten if an object is reduced from liquid form by heating it up.
What does it mean if something is in solution?
Something in solution is a mixture in which one substance is dissolved in another, especially a solid dissolved in a liquid.
