Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What is an ion?
A charged species
What is an ionic bond?
The electrostatic force of attraction
What is ionic bonding?
The transfer of electrons from a non-metal to a metal
What are the rules for naming compounds containing oxygen?
- Metal comes first
- Non metal + oxygen ends in -ate
What is different about a non-metal and non-metal compound?
When there is no metal present, this is NOT ionic bonding
What are the diatomic elements?
Hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine
Why do atoms take part in chemical reactions?
To achieve a full outer shell of electrons (which makes them very stable)
What happens if an atom loses or gains electrons?
The number of protons and electrons are no longer equal and a charged ion is formed
What does the charge of an ion depend on?
The number of electrons lost or gained
How do metal atoms achieve a full outer shell?
Losing electrons
What does the loss of electrons result in?
A positively charged ion
What is a CATION?
A positively charged ion
What is an ANION?
A negatively charged ion
How can we figure out the charge of an ion?
The group number of the element
How do non-metal atoms gain a full outer shell?
Gaining electrons
What does the gain of electrons result in?
A negatively charged ion
How does the name change when a non-metal atom forms an ion?
Oxygen changed to oxide
What charge do ionic compounds have?
Neutral because the positive ion charge cancels out the negative ion charge
What causes an ionic bond to form?
The attractive force between the positive cation and negative anion (oppositely charged ions)
What is the charge of silver?
1+
What is the charge of zinc?
2+
What is the charge of lead?
2+
What is the charge of iron II?
2+
What is the charge of iron III?
3+
What is the charge of copper II?
2+
What is a polyatomic ion?
A charged particle consisting of two or more atoms joined together
What is an ionic compound?
A giant structure of ions which have a regular, repeating arrangement called an ipnic lattice
