Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What elements does ionic bonding occur with?
occurs between metals and non metals
Why does chemical bonding occur?
To obtain full outer shell & noble gas configuration
What happens in ionic bonding?
Electrons are transferred from metals to non-metal forming positive and negative ions held by strong forces of electrostatic attraction
Ionic Bonded compound properties:
- solid at room temp
- very high melting & boiling points
- conduct electricity when molten/dissolved in polar substance
Why can’t ionic compounds conduct electricity when solid?
The ions are not free to move to carry current
Why are ionic compounds soluble?
Polar molecules have delta +ve & delta -ve charges which interact with the negative ions and positive ions respectively which causes the ions to breakfree
If delta +ve & delta -ve charges are weaker than electrostatic forces, why do do they cause ionic compounds to dissolve?
Because there are many delta +ve and delta -ve charges that collectively pulling the ionic compound apart.
