Ionic bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What is ionic bonding?
A
electrostatic forces of attraction between positive and negative ions/between opposely charged ions
2
Q
properties of ionic bonding
A
- have strong forces of attraction because of presence of opposing ions
- have a high melting and boiling point
- conduct electricity in the molten and solution form
3
Q
why do ions not conduct electricity when they are solid
A
the ions are fixed in position and are not free to move around.
4
Q
why do ionic compounds have high melting and boiling point?
A
strong electrostatic forces of attraction which hold the lattice together, alot of energy has to be supplied to break apart the strong forces of attraction
