Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What is ionic Bonding?
The electronic attraction between opposite charged ions.
Where does ionic Bonding occur?
Only between metals and non-metals.
Metals take electrons Non-Metals give electrons.
What are ions?
Ions ae charged particles that form when an atom loses or gains an electron.
What happens when an atom loses an electron?
It becomes positive.
What happens when an atom gains an electron?
It becomes negative charge.
2 Ionic examples
Calcium Chloride Ca Cl2
Aluminium Oxide Al2 O3
Magnesium Oxide MgO
Lithium Fluoride LiF
How atoms form Ionic Bonds?
Transferring one atom to the other
- Oppositely charged ions that are attracted to each other through electrostatic forces holding them together.
They Transfer to get a full outer shell
