ionic bonding Flashcards
what happens in ionic bonding ?
electrons are transferred from the metal to the non-metal in order to achieve a full outer shell / the electron configuration of a noble gas
what is the nature of bonding in ionic compounds ?
an electrostatic attraction between positive and negative ions
what kind of structure do ionic compounds arrange themselves in ?
a giant ionic lattice
what is every ion in the lattice attracted to ?
every ion in the lattice is attracted to every other oppositely charged ion
what is the melting and boiling point of ionic compounds and why ?
very high melting and boiling points
- because it takes a great deal of energy to overcome the strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions
what is the property of ionic compounds in water ?
can ionic compounds conduct electricity ?
ionic compounds can only conduct electricity when they are molten or dissolved in water
- because in a solid the ions are locked in place by the electrostatic forces of attraction so there are no free moving ions that can carry the charge
what does the strength of ionic bonding depend on ?
the greater the charge on the ions , the stronger the ionic bonding
the smaller the ions, the stronger the ionic bonding
how do sizes of atoms change on the periodic table ?
the size increases as you go down the group
how does the charge change on the periodic table ?
form the outside inwards
