Ionic Bonding Flashcards
Ionic bonding?
When a metal and a non-metal react together
Transfer of electrons
The metal atom loses electrons and the non-metal gains those electrons
Positive ion
Cation (metal)
Negative ion
Anion (non-metal)
When oppositely charged ions are strongly attracted (electrostatic attraction)
Ionic bond
Dot and cross diagram
Show the arrangement of electrons in an atom or ion. Shows where the dot or cross originally came from.
Sodium Chloride (NaCI)
The sodium atom gives up its outer electron, becoming an Na (+) ion. The Chlorine atom picks up the electron, becoming a CI(-) ion.
Ionic compounds have a…..
…..regular lattice structure
Regular Lattice Structure
Ions form a closely packed regular lattice. There are very strong electrostatic forces of attrition between oppositely charged ions, in all directions.
Properties
High melting/boiling points-strong attraction between ions
Don’t conduct electricity in solid state-fixed in place
Conducts electricity when melted-electrons are free to move
Dissolves easily- can carry an electrical charge- ions separate and free to move
