Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What is an ion?
A charged particle (positive or negative)
What does ionic bonding occur between?
Metal and non-metal
What does ionic bonding involve?
The transfer of electrons from the metal to the non-metal
Does the metal or non-metal become positively charged?
The metal becomes positively charged
Does the metal of non-metal become negatively charged?
The non-metal becomes negatively charged
Why do ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points?
Have a high melting and boiling point due to the strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions which require a lot of energy to break.
When and why do ionic compounds conduct electricity?
Conduct electricity when molten or in solution because the ions are able to move freely.
Why are ionic compounds hard?
Giant lattice structure with strong attractions between oppositely charged ions in all directions.
