ionic bonding Flashcards
1
Q
loss of electrons
A
oxidation
2
Q
gain of electrons
A
reduction
3
Q
define ‘ionic bonding’
A
electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
4
Q
why do ionic compounds have high melting points?
A
giant lattice/structure containing lots of ionic bonds
held together by lots of strong electrostatic forces of attraction (between oppositely charged ions)
so large amounts of energy needed to break apart these forced because they are strong.
5
Q
when do ionic compounds conduct electricity and why
A
as a liquid or dissolved because the charged particles can move freely - as a solid the ions are stuck in place so cannot conduct
