Ionic Bonding Flashcards
what types of elements does ionic bonding occur between?
a metal and a non-metal
what are the solid structures called in ions?
giant ionic lattices
what are ionic bonds?
the electrostatic forces of attraction between differently charged ions
how are ionic lattices formed?
oppositely charged ions attract eachother
what are the steps of drawing an ionic bonding diagram?
- draw out the atoms (making one X’s and the other O’s)
- draw the ions (include charges, draw full outer shell, remember brackets)
what are the properties of ionic compounds?
- solids
- high melting point / boiling point
- they cannot conduct electricity
why do ionic compounds have a high melting point / boiling point?
ionic bonds are strong, so it takes a lot of energy to break them
why do ionic compounds not conduct electricity?
ions cannot move in the giant ionic lattices. so the flow of an electric current is impossible in the solid
how could an ionic compound conduct electricity?
breaking the lattice up by melting or dissolving the ionic compound
what method is used to write ionic compound formula?
swap ‘n’ drop method
1. find charges of compounds
2. swap charges of compounds
3. put them as the subscript
