Ionic bonding Flashcards
What are ions ?
Ions are charged particles formed when atoms lose or gain electrons
Why do atoms want a full outer shell ?
So they are stable
What are positively charged ions ?
When atoms lose electrons
What are negatively charged ions ?
When atoms gain electrons
What are isotopes ?
When the same element has a different amount of neutrons in their nucleus
What state are ionic compounds in room temperature ?
Solid as they have a giant structure
Why are ionic compounds insulators of electricty when solid ?
because bonds are in a fixed position and are unable to carry charge
Why can ionic compounds conduct electricty when molten/in a solution ?
Because ions are able to move around and carry charge
What are the properties of ionic compounds ?
high melting point , high boiling points , insulators when solid , conductors when molten and giant ionic lattice structures .
